Most of society’s favorite sports are team-based. Football, basketball, hockey, and baseball all revolve around the pack mentality of people grouping together all their skills and lack thereof and doing their best with what they have to win. However, I believe that these sports can only build character but so much, they focus mostly on building the character of a group. I believe that individual sports build the character of individuals.

In my athletic career I have played numerous sports including martial arts, tennis, golf, basketball, and swimming. I have also participated in soccer. I believe all of these activities have contributed greatly to who I am as a team player and as an individual. However, I prefer individual sports over over team sports because they demand a sense of responsibility. Individual sports demand that the player be responsible for their own actions. If you win it was because of your own hard hard work and if you lose it was because of your own failure. No one else’s mistakes can contribute to your failure and for me, that created a sense of individuality and responsibility for my actions that I believe are lacking in many of the team players at my high school.

I personally believe that every student should be required to try at least one sport that  encourages and demands their individuality. This will lead to increased responsibility within the student population.
